reading # 2 The call of the wild
Have you ever read about THE CALL OF THE WILD , a bloody and cruel story which wrote by Jack London. The author was a well-known writer in North America in the begging of 20th. At that time, there was a very popular " Gold Rush" that attracted various people to Klondike. Many people dreamed that one day they might become a rich people, and as well as Jack London. Though the dangerious travel didn't make he became a rich man, he got many experiences. Then he wrote down this book.This story's main character was a dog , Buck who was born in a rich house. When he was abducted and sold, his life totally changed. He was sold to "Gold Rush" men and was sent to North for pulling sledge. Also, there were many other dogs which had some fates as Buck. In the meantime, for the rushing men wanted dogs to submit them, they bloodly and cruelly beated dogs. Most dogs fanally had to follow those men. the whole story told lots of those greedy and heartless gold rushing men how to train the dogs become more useful, and didn't care dogs at all.
however, in the story expect those heartless men, there was a kink old man in Buck's journey. They loved each other so much, so that Buck felt his life changed again. In the middle of the story, Buck didn't care his own life, tried many time to jump into cold water for saving the old man. It presented dog's loyalty and brave.

When I was a kid, Jack London's stories were still popular for boys to read. There were boys's books (like Jack London's books or Edgar Rice Burroughs -- he wrote Tarzan -- or the series of Tom Swift books, or the Hardy Boys mytseries) and there were girls' books (like Anne of Green Gables, etc. -- I dunno, lots of books about girls and horses . . )
I wonder how popular these books are today? Some of them were written especially for a kid audience; today, all those kids are playing computer games instead . . .
